Pooja Tripathi has had her show
twice at Witt gallery since 2012, including this show, i,5. It is
a photograghy show which has photos taken of freeway exits on I-5 around the Sacramento
area. Some photos were taken along the freeway, others were printed from
google’s street view, and still others were taken of road signs at the exits of
the freeway.
The artist has questions about what
kind of relationship someone could have with the locations featured in the
photographs. She pondered the city and town, and what lies futher.
The most interesting part of the images from the photos is there is a figure in each photo. Their action and poses are delivering something more than the artist’s question about the relation between passing-by-people and named places. One of the photos has a woman who is putting a printed street-view paper on the road sign. It feels to me like finding the treasure from the map. The photo contains the thrill of the figure, the same as when I found that my address on street view has my car there. I know it is not what the artist wants to say with her photos but the show made me check my house on street view again to find out if something else had changed.
