When
I finally saw her work in person after only seeing images of the artwork on her
website, I exclaimed, “there you go! I know how this work looks like!” Robin
Hill is a faculty of the art department in UD Davis. I often visit her artist
website and check on what the faculty and MFA students are doing since I have
been thinking of applying to MFA. I am not sure how much her artwork looks
different in person than from photo images, but I strongly felt they were
different for me.
I
made a list of her material from the exhibition. Cotton, paper, thread,
galvanized steel, pigment, dryer lint, washtub, giclee print, soil, graphite,
gouache, orange peels, beeswax, gesso, styrofoam, plaster, burned wood, canvas
mounted on panel, cast concrete, resin, aluminum, felted burlap, mica,
cellulose sponge, copper, glass, lens, filter paper, dried grapefruit, metal
basket, ping pong ball, seeds pods, scientific glass, porcelain, and scotch
tape.
Hill’s
art was divided into five groups. Photographs of her sculpture, four medium-sized
wall pieces, two medium-sized sculptures, eight smaller square wall pieces, and
twelve small sculptures on about two feet high pedestals. I am personally not
interested in using pedestals much, but if I need to show small artwork, I would
use it. Her lower pedestals use made me make my body lower. It is a different
engagement I have ever had.
Soft
and calmness was an entier feeling in the room and made me decided to visit
there again. There are a lot of connections to my art practice due to the overlapping
of her and my mediums and subtle combination of materials.
