Exchange: Else gallery, CSUS
Exchange, Curated by Summer Ventis
February 4- March 6, 2020
Robert Else Gallery, Kadema Hall, CSUS
Summer
Ventis, an art department professor at CSUS, curated this print exchange show.
There were four exchange packages on each side of the gallery walls, two print
exchange portfolios created by Sacramento State printmaking students and the
other two were professional print exchange packages.
I have been working
as a gallery sitter in Else gallery since fall 2019. I enjoy sitting, watching
and chatting with people who appreciate the artwork in this gallery. I mostly
work on Fridays. More people come from the community on Fridays. For this show,
especially, I can watch people discover their interest in printmaking. Printmaking
shows are infrequent, and people have less experience with prints compared with
other art. Sometimes, I have helped people to understand the meaning of exchange, print numbering, and creating
edge of etching. I realized people spend more time than for other shows, probably because there are many small size
prints that have delicate and detailed images that make people walk slower or
stay longer.
One print image from Hodology: Landscape in Motion (3rd photo from the top) : This
green hue abstract print was printed on shiny textured paper. Depending on the
value of the green color, the texture looked different, reflected light
separately. To me the image also seemed to show the networks between people and
landscape.
