Scott
Ross, who is a ceramic sculptor, gave a short lecture to Contemporary art
history and Ceramic class. When we got to the classroom, he had already created
two abstract pieces and presented them on the floor. Two ceramics students were
helping him to stomp clay inside of a framed wood structure.
Ross
explained his point of view of the difference between Pollock and Rothko's
abstract paintings. He said that Pollock’s painting is more a trace of his
physical movement, but Rothko’s is about describing his emotions. Ross wanted to make sculptures
for installation in private places. I understood what the intention of his work
was. he wanted to have a relationship between his work and the person who owns
it, but I felt sorry to hear about that for those who can’t have artwork
because of their economic situation.
Ross showed his
sketches for the pieces on the floor. He said that after they dry, he will put
them together to become a piece and it will be taller. His gestures of sketch
become very solid-looking ceramic sculptures in order to deliver his gesture
movement. It was an unexpected artist talk and I felt that personal gesture
creation is important to deliver artist intention.
